Black Is Black – It’s About Stout

Brasseur de Montréal commenced operation in 2008 out of Griffintown (a newly flourishing district South of Downtown Montreal).  In a short period, they have brought out close to twenty beers, many of them unique specialty brews. 

Their two newest offerings come in a four-pack dubbed “Black Pack”, with the different stouts, having the following on the labels – “each beer recipe was inspired by the best traditional recipes in the world: beers that are delicious and easy-drinking”.

The first beer is La Stout Cacao, which reminds me of the odours of devil’s food cake fresh out of my grandmother’s (or mom’s) oven – the one using Fry’s Cocoa and dark, bitter shiny icing.  The tastes are classic plain chocolate, with the addition of unsalted almonds.  Colour is simple – black-brown, opaque, with orange beige head.

The second is La Stout Café+Vanille.  The body is the same as above, with the foam- slightly darker brown.  The nose is vanilla, caramel, and espresso, while the taste is sweet with creamy coffee, with some wild berry after-taste.  Both beers paired will with roast beef and mushrooms and semi-sweet chocolate. 

Overall, this package is a pleasant, though limited edition, available in some specialty depanneurs, cheese shops, and grocery stores.  Both of the beers mentioned here are at 6.6% alc., and the 4-pack goes for $9.99 for 4-12oz bottles.  A success (again) for Marc-André and Denise (and their intrepid brew masters).

Congratulations’ to the New York Giants on their Super Bowl win.
